If you live in rural Ireland, chances are you rely on a Puraflo – Bord na Mona Puraflo system to treat and dispose of your wastewater. These systems are an eco-friendly, efficient solution for managing household sewage, but like any system, they require regular maintenance to function effectively. That’s where TPW Systems comes in—offering expert service and repair for Puraflo systems, including sustainable alternatives to traditional peat-based solutions.

Standard Septic Tank

A standard septic tank receives all wastewaters, Toilets, sinks, baths showers and settle all the Solids in first chamber. Water enters the second chamber for further settlement. Water leaves via a fitted filter .

Maintenance   — Empty and de-sludge the tank at least every 2 years which should include cleaning of the outlet filter

Pump station

Filtered effluent leave the septic and is piped to adjacent pump station which pumps it to The Puraflo Mods .

Maintenance – Should include checking the pump itself, desludging the pump chamber and Checking operation of the alarm float and beacon. This indicates a problem before failure of toilet flushing etc.

Puraflo Mods

These are recognizable as usually min of 2 dark green lids ( approx. 8ft x 4ft each) at ground level or on raised bed. They receive the pump effluent from the septic tank/pump station  and disperse it over contained Peat which biologically treats as the waters trickle through down to the bottom. Treated waters are dispersed to underlying bed of drainage stone to soak away. This should be checked regualry through the inspection chamber!

Maintenance – generally involves flushing out of the dispersal piping but replacement of the peat in the Bord Na Mona Puraflo system is essential and should on average be replaced every 8 years depending on use. Failure to do so will lead to certain failure of the percolation area which leads to pollution, health risks and costly rebuilding of the area.

Benefits of Regular Maintenance with TPW Systems

  1. Prevent System Failures: Timely maintenance avoids costly repairs and protects your property.
  2. Protect the Environment: Prevent pollution and ensure treated water disperses safely.

A well-functioning septic tank or domestic wastewater treatment system is vital for maintaining a healthy home and protecting the environment. These systems treat and dispose of wastewater efficiently, keeping your home’s plumbing running smoothly while preventing harmful pollutants from entering the soil and local water supplies. However, like any other household infrastructure, they require regular servicing and maintenance to function optimally. Neglecting maintenance can lead to serious problems, from unpleasant odors to environmental damage and costly repairs.

At TPW Systems, we understand the importance of maintaining septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. That’s why we offer dedicated services to ensure your system continues to operate safely and effectively, helping you avoid unnecessary issues.

Why Regular Servicing is Essential

  1. Prevent System Failures
Regular maintenance prevents major issues from developing. Septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems rely on natural biological processes to break down waste. Over time, sludge and solids accumulate in the tank, and if not removed, they can cause blockages and overflows, leading to system failure. A system breakdown not only disrupts your home’s plumbing but can also lead to costly repairs or replacements.
  2. Protecting the Environment
Septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems are designed to treat waste efficiently before releasing it into the soil. If the system is not properly maintained, untreated waste can seep into the ground, contaminating nearby water sources like rivers, lakes, and even groundwater supplies. This contamination can harm local wildlife and pose significant health risks to your family and community.
  3. Avoid Costly Repairs and Replacements
Ignoring maintenance might save you money in the short term, but the long-term costs of neglect can be significant. System malfunctions due to lack of service often require expensive repairs or complete system replacement. A small investment in regular servicing can save you from these high expenses by catching potential issues early and ensuring that your system runs smoothly for years to come.
  4. Health and Safety
An improperly maintained septic tank can lead to the build-up of dangerous gases like methane and hydrogen sulfide, which pose serious health risks. In addition, untreated wastewater can cause harmful pathogens to enter your property, potentially leading to illness. Regular servicing keeps your system functioning safely and protects your household from these hazards.
  5. Compliance with Regulations
In many regions, homeowners are required by law to maintain their septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in fines and legal issues. Regular maintenance ensures your system is in line with environmental and public health standards.

When it comes to designing an efficient and long-lasting domestic wastewater treatment system, choosing the right septic tank is crucial. Among the various options available, concrete septic tank systems stand out as the preferred choice for many homeowners and professionals in the wastewater management industry. In this article, we will explore why concrete septic tank systems are better than their alternatives and why TPW Systems is recognized as the market leader in the supply and installation of these systems.

Why Choose Concrete Septic Tank Systems?

  1. Durability and Longevity

Concrete septic tanks are known for their exceptional durability and longevity. Made from reinforced concrete, these tanks are designed to withstand extreme conditions, including heavy loads, soil pressure, and natural elements like water and temperature changes. Unlike plastic or fiberglass tanks, concrete septic tank systems do not crack, warp, or degrade over time, making them a more reliable choice for homeowners looking for a long-term solution. Concrete’s inherent strength ensures that these tanks can last for several decades, offering a lifespan far superior to other materials.

  1. Better Environmental Compatibility

Concrete septic tank systems are environmentally friendly in several ways. Firstly, concrete is a natural material that does not leach harmful chemicals into the soil, unlike some plastic tanks that can release toxins over time. Secondly, concrete tanks provide better insulation, reducing the risk of freezing in colder climates, which is a common issue with lighter materials. This thermal stability ensures that the biological processes within the septic tank continue uninterrupted, maintaining the effectiveness of the wastewater treatment process.

  1. Improved Structural Integrity

When it comes to concrete wastewater treatment, structural integrity is paramount. Concrete septic tanks are less prone to damage during installation or from shifting soil conditions over time. Their heavyweight nature means they are not easily displaced by groundwater, unlike lighter alternatives like plastic or fiberglass tanks that may float or move under certain conditions. This makes concrete tanks ideal for areas with high water tables or fluctuating soil conditions.

  1. Cost-Effectiveness Over Time

While the initial cost of installing a concrete septic tank system may be higher than other options, the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial investment. Concrete tanks require less maintenance and are less likely to need replacement or repair, resulting in significant cost savings over time. Additionally, the resale value of a property equipped with a reliable concrete wastewater treatment system is often higher, as potential buyers recognize the value of a durable, low-maintenance septic solution.

Why Are Concrete Septic Tanks Better Than Plastic or fiberglass alternatives ?

There are several types of septic tanks available, including plastic, fiberglass, and steel. However, these alternatives come with their own set of drawbacks:

  • Plastic and Fiberglass Tanks: While lighter and easier to install, plastic and fiberglass tanks lack the durability of concrete septic tank systems. They are prone to damage from impacts, shifting soil, and extreme weather conditions. Over time, they can degrade or crack, leading to potential leaks and costly repairs.
  • Steel Tanks: Although steel tanks are strong, they are highly susceptible to rust and corrosion, especially in areas with high soil moisture or salt content. This can significantly reduce their lifespan and require frequent maintenance or replacement.

Concrete septic tank systems, on the other hand, do not suffer from these issues. They offer a robust and reliable solution that performs consistently well under various conditions, making them the preferred choice for domestic wastewater treatment.

What is Percolation Testing?

Percolation testing, commonly known as a “perc test,” is a method used to assess how well soil can absorb and drain water. This test is especially crucial when determining if a site is suitable for septic system installation or, more importantly, when evaluating the potential impact of a development on local groundwater resources.

How Does Percolation Testing Work?

The process of percolation testing involves several steps. First, it requires digging a hole in the ground. Then, the hole is filled with water, and the rate at which the water drains away is measured. This measurement, known as the percolation rate, subsequently helps determine the soil’s capacity to handle wastewater disposal. Understanding this rate is vital, as it ensures the proper and safe installation of septic systems or other water-related infrastructure.

Why is Percolation Testing Important?

Percolation testing is an essential step in site assessment because it provides critical information that influences key decisions about site development. Furthermore, it affects septic system design, storm water management, and potential impacts on the local water table. By conducting a perc test, professionals can, therefore, ensure the safety, functionality, and sustainability of construction projects.

Percolation Testing Standards and Regulations

Percolation testing is a standardized procedure that is typically regulated by local or state authorities. While the specific requirements and procedures may vary by location, the fundamental principles of the test remain consistent. Consequently, it is important for anyone involved in planning, design, or construction to understand the basics of percolation testing to ensure their project meets local regulations.
